Detroit Free Press Pulitzers

Congratulations to 1985 Free Press intern and Wall Street Journal reporter Angelo Henderson, who won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing, and 1991 intern Wilfredo Lee, who shared in the Associated Press' winning of the 1999 Pulitzer for spot news photography.

Lisa Pollak of the Baltimore Sun, winner of the 1997 Pulitzer Prize in feature writing, interned at the Free Press in 1992.

1990: Feature photography, awarded to David C. Turnley for photos taken at international developments in Berlin, Bucharest and Beijing.

1989: Feature photography, awarded to Manny Crisostomo for a yearlong project at Southwestern High School.

1981: Feature photography, awarded to Taro Yamasaki for photos taken inside Jackson Prison.

1968: General local reporting, awarded to the Free Press staff for coverage of the 1967 riot.

1956: Local reporting on a deadline, awarded to Lee Hills for stories about negotiations between Ford, GM and the UAW.

1955: Editorial writing, awarded to Royce Howes, for a series about an unauthorized strike at Chrysler.

1945: Public service, awarded to Ken McCormick for reporting on charges of bribery and corruption involving state lawmakers.

1932: Reporting, awarded to W.P. Richards, P.D. Martin, J.S. Pooler, F.D. Webb and J.N.W. Sloan for reporting on a parade at the American Legion's national convention.
