99% of the population of Afghanistan is Islamic and it is this which constitutes the common link binding together the more than 20 diverse ethnic, linguistic and societal groups. Of these 84% are Sunni and 15% are Shi’ite. Other religious groups include Sikhs, Hindus and reportedly two Jewish families.
